When we talk about home remodeling, we used to think that it was only a job for home builders and contractors. Today, however, it is a different story. Now more people are leaning toward the DIY (do it yourself) generation. There are numerous videos and testimonials on television and the Internet showing off amazing home transformations through DIY projects.

This begs the question: Is it really that easy?

Before you jump at the next design that your heart desires for your home, be ready to ask yourself a few questions. (And don’t forget to answer them along the way!)

1. What do you really want?

If you want a lifestyle change, opening up a space for a new person in the house, or simply a change of taste, you should make your intentions clear. Having a clear vision of what your intended outcome is will help you make decisions along the way.

2. What can you afford?

Just like how you intend for your home to look, how much you are willing to spend must also figure into the home remodeling process. This is even trickier if you’re going to borrow the money you will use in the home remodeling. Come up with a realistic budget, and don’t forget to incorporate labor, materials, and miscellaneous expenses (transportation, representation, etc.) in the overall financial plan.

3. How does the entire process start?

If you plan properly then you’ve got half the job done. Itemize everything that you intend as input in the home remodeling. Along the way you will ask the opinion of a professional, so before you finalize your plan you should talk to plumbers, contractors and other people in the business. If you can, you may even ask people who have just had their homes remodeled about their expenses and related costs. Compare, compare, compare. Prioritize your needs.

4. Which projects are the most important?

The most important projects in your home are the ones that can bring a lot of value to the property. Such projects are typically ones involving your kitchen, living room, bathroom, front area, staircase, etc. If you’re uncertain of what will increase the value of the property the most, you may consult a real estate agent with this.

Once you have these things covered, start cleaning up to prep your home for the remodeling process. Once you declutter it will be easier to determine which areas really need improvement.
